G.R.O.W.
Gardener Residents
Of Winthrop

PURPOSE: To create a more focused vehicle for capable and avid gardener-volunteers, to offer an outlet for their many plants and skills, and effect change, readily enhance and sustain public places by creating displays with donated materials and hands-on plantings.

In our seaside Community, many gardeners have kept wonderful plantings at their homes, and have shared many of their varied plants with one another. With increasing interest and hands-on experience for improving the look of our community, others have proposed and done the work of transforming various places in the public sphere with such donated plant cuttings, and/or helping with their gardening skills to effect positive changes. For making such a resident impact, the loose affiliation of such skillful people coming together for improving our Town’s appearance is the purpose of G.R.O.W..

With the acronym G.R.O.W., for Gardener Residents Of Winthrop, such a specialized entity would be a key component of the non-profit group, Tree Winthrop - Winthrop Loves Trees (WLT) & G.R.O.W., founded and organized by Joanne Hillman, and affiliated with the Winthrop Beautification Committee.

To help fulfill the purpose for G.R.O.W., Tree Winthrop - WLT & G.R.O.W. and the Beautification Committee are requesting resident input and assistance for participation at various times and in various degrees with projects and/or plant materials. In a previous generation, Winthrop once had a Gardening Club comprised of active resident gardeners. Also, since 1986, we have had the example of the Beautification Committee.

With the increasing pace of life, and significant physical changes to our public realm, many “green” areas have become neglected, quite shabby, unattractive, and/or uncared for by an ever-short-handed DPW, and their one experienced plant person on staff. With DPW approvals, and the direct help of gardener-friends, TREE WINTHROP, with local businesses has been able to effect some visible changes in public places, beginning with positive plantings in the Center area.

Under the umbrella of Tree Winthrop, the G.R.O.W. program will help create a network of our fellow resident- gardeners, willing to help, from time to time. The collective experience in gardening plants and/or hands-on help with manageable projects, could also be a learning tool for families new to town young volunteers, other friends, and/or relations. The more names of friends in Tree Winthrop, the better we can share tasks on various projects, expanding our green resources while enhancing our volunteer experience and our impact on our town.
To help us develop a list of gardeners for Tree Winthrop projects, please become a member of Tree Winthrop – Winthrop Loves Trees & G.R.O.W.. Share our post, web site, links, and messaging, give friends a call, share this letter, and confirm their interest.

Thank you.
